The Municipal Institute for Housing and Renovation (IMHAB) has started work on a building with 152 homes for elderly people at the former barracks known as the Casernes de Sant Andreu. An annexe on the ground floor will also provide a space of 1,200 square metres for a youth centre, the Espai Jove Jaume Oller. In addition, a public competition is under way to award the contracts to build two more public housing blocks with social rents for young people.
The work now in progress is for Building C, a project by the architect Josep Llinàs. The building will be located on a 10,200 square-metre site classified for construction in C/ Antoni Santiburcio, between Pg. Torras i Bages and the park of the same name.
The project will create 152 homes with services for the elderly and premises of 1,200 square metres for the Espai Jove Jaume Oller, which has been designed with participation from young people from the neighbourhoods of Sant Andreu, Trinitat Vella and Baró de Viver. An underground car park of 1,400 square metres will also be built.
The work should be completed at the end of 2022. The budget for the project is 15.3 million euros, VAT included.
Two more affordable housing developments
At the same time, and in the same area at the Casernes de Sant Andreu, the IMHAB is tendering the projects and works for two more public housing blocks. One is Building A, consisting of 84 flats with social rents at C/ Víctor Colomer, 6-12, and the other is Building J, consisting of 60 rental flats for young people at C/ Fernando Pessoa, 53-57.
