Approval for the collaboration agreement with the Fundació Hàbitat3 to formally complete the purchase of the Casa Orsola. From now on the foundation will manage the property with social criteria. The socially motivated purchase cost 9.2 million euros, some 30% below the current market price in the neighbourhood of Nova Esquerra de L’Eixample. The City Council has acquired 45,68% of the building, with the foundation purchasing 54,32%.
Barcelona City Council and the Fundació Hàbitat3 announced the purchase of the Casa Orsola in February through an innovative formula promoted by Hàbitat 3, putting a halt to the eviction processes and turning the vacant homes into protected ones.
Located between C/ Consell de Cent, 122, and C/ Calàbria, 137, the building has 26 homes and 4 commercial premises. Nine of the flats will form part of the public housing stock once the temporary contracts end and empty flats are recovered, while the rest of contracts will be maintained and reviewed in line with current regulations.
The operation was possible thanks to the mediation of the Barcelona Ombudsman and represents a new model of collaboration between the administration and the third sector to guarantee the right to decent and affordable housing in the city.
