The Government Commission has approved the special urban planning and improvement plan to develop the residential fabric of the area around Fira de Barcelona and La Model, allowing for the creation of 500 accessible homes and 48 homes with services, a new network of local facilities and more than 6,800 square metres of green space. The transformation of the area has a budget of 90.6 million euros, with work due to start in 2029 and conclude in 2033.
The process is another step towards making the mountain of Montjuïc and its neighbourhoods a new metropolitan centre and consolidating it as a green lung and epicentre for major cultural and sports events.
New facilities and affordable housing
The project organises three closed blocks next to the current Plaça Univers and generates a new open central space of 2,400 square metres and a small square of 800 square metres, which will act as a meeting space and articulate housing and facilities.
The project promotes a new centrality of facilities of 18,400 square metres for education, healthcare, care and support, sports, socio-cultural and administrative uses. A new primary healthcare centre is also planned, with access from C/ Lleida and from the new square, plus the enlargement of the Espai Bombers, the enlargement of the playground at the Escola Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer, the recovery of Pavilion 2 for a multi-purpose sports hall, the relocation of the City Police vehicle compound and one of the housing blocks.
New green spaces
In addition to the buildings and facilities, a further 6,858 square metres of new green space will be added with abundant vegetation, shade, urban furniture, children’s games and places for people to spend time in, designed with universal accessibility and climate comfort criteria. An intersecting public thoroughfare will connect C/ Lleida with the prolongation of C/ Guàrdia Urbana.
The urban planning for the new residential fabric will be explained to residents in Poble-sec in an information session on Thursday, 11 December.
Remodelling of the Palau Alfons XIII and the Palau Victòria Eugènia
The Government Commission has also approved the special urban planning and improvement plan (PEUMU), which has the goal of renovating the two palaces, as well as the plan resulting from the Pavelló del Vestit and the Pavelló Multifunctional.
The proposal includes the improvement of accessibility and quality of the free spaces, the spatial organisation of the subsoil for the future L2 station and connections between pavilions. With the incorporation of new cultural and tertiary uses, the PUEMU strengthens the connection with Fira de Barcelona and consolidates Montjuïc as a leading cultural and heritage centre for the city.
