This weekend brings various activities to enjoy, despite the summer heat. The Grec festival is organising a family celebration on Saturday, with shows, music, workshops and games. The 10th edition of the Sant Jaume giants’ meeting is being held on Saturday afternoon too, bringing together all the giant groups in Ciutat Vella. Elsewhere, La Pionera, the innovative new venue in Poblenou, is offering two days of activities based around sustainable commerce, gastronomy, music, shows and workshops for young and old alike.

The Grec festival is organising a party for all the family on Saturday afternoon (from 4 pm). The celebration is being held at the Teatre Grec and the surrounding gardens. Throughout the afternoon there’s a chance to discover the various spots around the site which have been turned into spaces to prompt play and spark the imagination, with sections based around the land of giants, ephemerals, a sonàrium and the woodpecker.
There’s also the prospect of seeing musicians and actors such as Roleguita & Boquerón, Pep López and Natxo Tarrés & The Wireless, as well as music from The Pinker Tones and Xiula and the show Reggae per xics. Younger children can also meet Blanko, an immaculate character represented by JOHNman, who will end up getting painted by the kids.
New edition of La Pionera
La Pionera, which provides opportunities for people starting out, is opening its doors again this weekend. You’ll find sustainable commerce, gastronomy, leisure, music, workshops, children’s activities and shows for people of all ages. This outdoor site, where Pg. Calvell and Rbla. Poblnou meet, promotes new socio-economic innovation projects, enabling visitors to enjoy a wide array of culinary, cultural and recreational activities.
The programme starts on Saturday at 12.30 pm with the composer, pianist and singer Lu Rois. At the same time there will also be ‘pioneer workshops’ for young children. At 1.30 pm, Unpictured DJ will have people dancing along to summer music, while in the evening Taki Sounds will be performing cumbia music at 8 pm. On Sunday afternoon the Mal di Mar circus company will be offering a show, followed by a swing class which everyone can join in with.
Giants get together in the Gòtic neighbourhood
For lovers of popular culture, traditions and music by gralla pipe and percussion groups, Saturday is the day. Over the last few years, around the day of Sant Jaume (25 July), the giant group of the same name pay homage to their patron with a gathering of giants, this year in its tenth edition.
The parade starts at 5.30 pm with a static display of giants in Plaça de la Mercè, with all the giant groups from the district of Ciutat Vella taking part: the Gegants del Pi, the Gegants de la Plaça Nova, the Gegants de la Barceloneta, the Gegants del Raval, the Gegants del Casc Antic and the Gegants de Sant Pere de les Puel·les. At 7 pm the parade returns to the starting point to perform the dances of honour and round the celebrations off.
