The Municipal Plenary has approved a modification to the General Metropolitan Plan (MPGM) to open up the use of six municipally-owned plots of land to make sites available to extend the future stock of public rental housing by 519 new flats.
The sites are located in the districts of Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó, Sant Martí and Sants-Montjuïc, where 475 new flats will be built. A further site at C/ Alts Forns 84-86 also forms part of the programme, with an existing building consisting of 44 flats, originally built as a publicly-owned residence for the elderly.
The new building projects must include spaces for public facilities on the ground floor.
The measure responds to the Municipal Government strategy to act to combat the housing emergency via all means available. The procedure will now go to the Barcelona Urban-Planning Subcommittee, a body of the Government of Catalonia, for final approval.
